Utilize
the Internet Reasonably
As the progress and development of
the times, the trend of technology relies more on the Internet, a rapid and
abundant information platform. Internet is also a good carrier to provide us a number of
functional applications and useful software in all aspects of our lives and
works. Internet connects the people wherever you are all over the world. General speaking, Internet provides a wealth
of resources and ideas for people to do their works. Such as, university
students find the resources to finish their academic task. Artists and
designers can obtain their sources of inspiration from reading and viewing other
works posted on the internet. Businessmen combine the timely online information
with their expertise to make investment decisions. Therefore, Internet has
played an important role in current life. However, with the functional
improvement of the Internet, some problems like plagiarism, copy and download
without permission, fake business information are existing. In this paper, I
will mainly state my understanding of the Internet’s benefits in terms of
different fields and point out the bad phenomenon existing on the Internet, and
I advocate that we should make the best use of resources and obey the Internet legal
papers, use the resources and cite ideas reasonably and correctly to avoid the
plagiarism. We can’t rely on Internet too much so that we lose the spirit of
innovation.
The first advantage of Internet is
to provide a database for students to do research. When professor assign a
topic to us, we will soon generate our main ideas in the mind, but we need some
convictive examples to demonstrate our points of view. The best and time-saving
way is to search the relative topics on the Internet. After getting the
articles and references, we can make a summary on each articles. Some key
points and major ideas can be paraphrased in our own words. This progress will
be very helpful for us to make a big progress on our academic performance. So
it is critical for students to learn and know how to use the resources on the
Internet to improve our writing skills and abilities.
Second, the Internet is an
important tool to help artists and designers to conceive works. When the
artists or designers have ideas, they build frame first, then they seek
accurate information through the Internet to support their draft. Finally, a
combination of all resources will make the results and visual effects more
perfect, such as Deviant Art. It is an online community showcasing various
forms of user-made artworks. “Deviant
Art aims to provide a platform for any artists and designers to exhibit and
discuss works(wikipedia).”
Creators can get a lot of inspiration from there, and usually artists and
designers want to go place such as Deviant Art to get the newest information
about art and design. Another example is Pento, another online ideas box. Pento
always shares some useful information for creators so that they can keep up
with the major trend of the times. Therefore, the resources from Internet
really can help artists to get useful elements and ideas. Artists should
reasonably use this resources and often visit the artworks website to improve
themselves.
The third advantage of Internets
stems from business field. Some subject like Finance develops so fast as the
result of the spread speed of Internet. As an investor, we can know the stock
prices at home or in your office. We can know the latest interest rates on
different types of deposits, loans and mortgage. It helps people to make some
necessary decisions first time. Some famous investors’ success rely on their
visionary and observation on the dynamic information based on the Internet.
Some famous business entity gets successful due to the reference of business
concepts from other’s website. For example, McDonald’s, a big American global
carting company, is also popular in my home country. People like to go to
McDonald’s to enjoy fast food in China. Therefore McDonald is very successful
in Chinese market. Meanwhile there is another kind of fast food restaurant
called Dicos. By referring to the business concepts on McDonald’s website,
Dicos make a comparison and concentrates their major markets on relatively
smaller cities and creates some new and different things in their menu.
Therefore, we can say that Dicos gets their business ideas from McDonald and
operates their own special fast food, it is helpful for Dicos to survive in the
market. When an interview was given to the current CEO of Dicos, he said that “opportunity
is scarce, thanks to the website, we know the famous fast food McDonald’s
business concepts, based on their open information offered on the website, we did
a detailed research on their financial statement and menus, finally we found
out what kinds of industrial structure fits in our company and what kinds of
food are more competitive in smaller market.” Thus, the open information on the
website is really important for some startup companies to study and
follow. From another perspective, borrowing
ideas from others and building upon them to create something which is newer and
better is a good strategy. In our textbook, Lessing called this kind of borrowing
is “Disney Creativity (Lessig22)” my
example, McDonald’s have one more competitor, it could be a kind of pressure to
prompt McDonald’s to create more delicious food that fits in local markets.
Competition in business will bring benefit to both sides, it seems like a power
to push the industry forward.
However,
all things have good and bad aspects. Some bad phenomena are gradually
exposing. Some students and scholars don’t complete their academic papers by
themselves. They directly use the excellent and nice ideas from other authors’
works. It is plagiarism. According to Robert S.
Nelson, Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and
"purloining and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts,
ideas, or expressions (Wikipedia)" and the representation of them as one's
own original work. Plagiarism is regarded academic dishonesty and a breach of
ethics losses. We should prohibit the plagiarism happening in our academic
research, especially from the Internet. In addition to, some artists and
designers copied the ideas and downloaded their works from the Internet
without any permission. They search the Internet to find the works they want,
then they use the materials directly. By using this way, they save lots of time
and money to obtain more personal interest. This behavior is absolutely
wrong. It is unfair and immoral to the original authors, and it can be
regarded as “rob the author of the profit (lessig).” It is an appropriate
option that creator to get the inspiration from the original author and his
content, then they can make themselves’ originality and combine them together
in order to generate personal ideas and results. There is no doubt that all
things have a starting point, and many final excellent ideas and works stem
from this point in terms of our cultural background and feeling of art. That’s
the reason why we should do a great number of practice and research during our
study time. Using the information and ideas from the internet reasonably and
accurately will bring lots of help and benefits to their creation programs. So
artists and designers must distinguish the difference between copy and citation
in order to create new ideas and good composition. On the other hand, some
creators rely on Internet too much so that the ability of innovation is abate.
As Dutch artist Rafael Rozendaal saying that “The websites should not try to be
paintings (Rodzendaal 33).” Anyway Internet just a kind of machine to help
human how to work efficiently but it can not instead of human brain. Besides that, some business fraud
is always existing on the Internet, such as some brokers provides fake
information to his customers in order to attract more funds. Some companies
update the fake financial income statements on their websites in order to
attract more investors. Inside trading and moral hazard are really big trouble
to hinder the true information to exchange. So I think the Internet needs more
regulation and rules to maintain the function well.
In sum, Internet is gradually becoming a necessary part in our
life, people can’t not live and work better without the access of Internet. In
particular, students and scholars use the references and resources to finish
their academic requirements. Artists and designers rely on the inspiration from
the internet to expand their visionary. The famous Dutch artist Rafael
Rozendaal said “The website can exist anywhere you want, anyway you want (Rozendaal 32).” Internet is a good
platform for creators to get newest ideas and it is also a good proscenium and
backstage tool for creator. Business area needs accurate and transparent
information to make the financial and economics systems robust. But every coin
has two sides, plagiarize, copies, fake information and business fraud on the
internet also exist and affect the development of innovation. Personally, I
think we should make the best use of resources and obey the Internet legal
papers, use the resources and cite ideas reasonably and correctly to avoid the plagiarism.
We can’t rely on Internet too much so that we lose the spirit of innovation. After
all, our life need more real creators rather than copycats.
